How to Compare Shade Net Quotations Without Looking at Price Alone
Two shade net quotations can show the same colour and shade percentage yet describe products with very different construction, consistency and expected outdoor performance. A lower rate may be genuine, but it may also reflect a lighter net, different yarn construction, wider tolerances, limited UV-stabilization evidence, basic finishing or a different freight basis.
The safest approach is to compare every offer against one written requirement. Price becomes meaningful only after confirming that all suppliers are quoting a technically comparable product and the same delivered quantity.
Start with the intended application
Tell the supplier where the net will be installed and what it needs to achieve. Crop shading, a nursery roof, terrace coverage, boundary screening and construction-site containment place different demands on the net. Include the location, expected exposure, installation method and required service conditions.
A supplier who understands the application can explain which specifications matter. A quotation that lists only “green shade net” and a rate per metre leaves too much open to interpretation.
Compare the same unit and dimensions
Confirm whether the price is per square metre, running metre, kilogram, roll or piece. If quotations use running metres, check the roll width: one metre from a wider roll contains more material and covers more area.
Verify the declared width, roll length, number of rolls, total square metres and permitted dimensional tolerance. Also check whether the quoted quantity is net usable material or includes packing and handling allowances.
Pro Tip Convert every quotation to the same total square metres and delivery basis before comparing rates. A lower price per running metre may simply be for a narrower roll.
Check shade percentage and GSM separately
Shade percentage describes measured light reduction. GSM describes the mass of fabric per square metre. They are not interchangeable, and one cannot reliably predict the other.
Two nets with similar GSM can have different shade factors because their yarn width, filament diameter, colour, mesh geometry and knitting pattern differ. Two nets with the same nominal shade percentage may also have different GSM and handling characteristics. Confirm yarn construction
Tape yarn, monofilament yarn and combined mono-tape constructions are produced differently and can behave differently during handling and installation. Do not compare them as though they are identical simply because the colour and shade factor match.
Ask the supplier to identify the construction clearly. Where strength is important, request relevant breaking, bursting or tear-performance information instead of relying on visual thickness alone.
Ask about raw material and UV stabilization
Outdoor HDPE net needs an appropriate stabilization package because sunlight can degrade unstabilized polymer. Ask whether the net is made with virgin material, reprocessed material or a declared blend, and request written confirmation of UV stabilization and available quality evidence.
An unusually low quotation can sometimes indicate compromises such as reprocessed material, lower stabilizer loading, inconsistent yarn, lower actual GSM or weaker finishing. This should not be assumed from price alone; it should prompt a more detailed specification check.
Review colour, finishing and customization
Colour can affect light transmission, heat absorption and appearance, but it should be compared together with shade percentage, GSM and construction. Custom colours or small production runs may carry additional setup costs.
Check whether edges are reinforced and whether eyelets, stitching, cut panels, labels or special packing are included. These features add work beyond knitting the net and can materially change both price and installation convenience.
Compare packing, freight and taxes
A factory rate and a delivered rate are not the same. Confirm whether packing, freight, insurance, taxes and unloading are included. For export orders, verify the Incoterm, port, documentation and packing method. For domestic deliveries, confirm the destination and whether transport charges are prepaid or payable separately.

Look for evidence of consistency
Ask how the supplier controls shade factor, GSM, dimensions and roll identification between production batches. Samples are useful, but the delivered material should also be traceable to the quoted specification.
Consider communication, documentation, lead time, complaint handling and the supplier’s ability to reproduce the same specification. A small rate difference may be poor value if inconsistent rolls delay installation or require replacement.
Use a quotation comparison checklist
Send the same information to every supplier and compare their responses line by line:
- Application and installation location
- Nominal shade percentage and tolerance
- GSM and tolerance
- Tape, mono or mono-tape construction
- Raw-material declaration and UV stabilization
- Colour
- Roll width, length and total area
- Required strength information
- Reinforced edges, eyelets, stitching or cut panels
- Packing and labelling
- Quantity and production lead time
- Freight, taxes and delivery basis
- Quality documents and batch traceability
- Quotation validity and payment terms

Compare value over the intended use
The lowest initial rate is not necessarily the lowest cost for the project. Consider the usable area supplied, installation effort, consistency, expected service conditions and the cost of early replacement or project delay.
A good buying decision does not ignore price. It places price beside a complete, verifiable specification so that the comparison is fair.
