Shade Percentage vs GSM: Why These Two Shade Net Specifications Should Not Be Confused
Shade percentage and GSM answer different questions. Confusing them can lead to a net that is heavier than expected but blocks the wrong amount of light—or provides the desired shade but lacks the handling characteristics required for the installation.
What shade percentage means
Shade factor is the percentage of incident light not transmitted through the net under a defined test. A 50% shade net is intended to block about half the measured light in that test context. It does not promise a 50% fall in air temperature, roof temperature or energy load.
What GSM means
GSM means grams per square metre: the mass of one square metre of fabric. It is useful for checking material consistency, roll weight and conformance with a declared construction. It does not directly state how much light is blocked.
Why the numbers do not map one-to-one
Two nets can have similar GSM but different shade factors because yarn width, filament diameter, mesh geometry, colour and knitting pattern differ. What to put in a purchase specification
- Nominal shade factor and applicable test method
- Construction: tape, mono or combined
- Mass per square metre and tolerance
- Width, length and dimensional tolerance
- Colour and intended application
- Breaking or bursting performance where relevant
- Retention of strength after UV exposure
BIS testing schedules treat mass, dimensions, shade type and strength as separate requirements. Buyers should do the same.
